Genetic Testing Program Details
In Massachusetts, you may be eligible for free genetic testing. The GIFTSS (Genetic Information for Treatment, Surveillance and Support) Program provides free tests and financial assistance for tests for those who qualify. Testing is provided for those at high risk for breast cancer (BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes), ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic and prostate cancer or melanoma mutations. Additionally, genetic tests that determine the aggressiveness of some forms of cancer may also be provided.
How We Can Help
The Cancer Resource Foundation receives grant funding to provide this support to you. If your insurance does not cover the test(s) ordered by your physician and you meet both medical and financial guidelines, you may be eligible for a free test. If your insurance covers the test but you are unable to meet the "out of pocket" expenses you could qualify for the MA Genetic Testing Co-Pay Assistance Program. We provide financial assistance up to $520.00 per test, for those who have insurance that covers the test but are unable to meet the "out of pocket" responsibility.
See a Genetics Counselor
Remember, too, that experts in healthcare recommend that you see a genetics counselor to help you understand what it means to have a gene mutation. Counselors can help you to think about the choices you face both medically and personally if your test results are positive for a specific gene mutation. Your genetic counselor or provider can assist you in applying for genetic testing financial assistance.
Eligibility Guidelines:
- Your household income is below 250% of the federal poverty guidelines
- You have health insurance
- You are a Massachusetts resident
- Your doctor, healthcare provider or genetic counselor determines that you meet the medical criteria for the test.
